For the last five months our city has been a part of and witnessed protests in the names of Black and Brown people who have faced years of systemic racism, police brutality, and oppression. In order to create a space for youth voices to be heard and for demands to be met, the Youth for Black Lives event was created. We are comprised of a group of friends and recent alums from the William Penn Charter School and one student from La Salle University. On Sunday, 8/2 the Youth for Black Lives group and partnering organizations are holding a demonstration to hold our government officials, schools, and Philadelphia based businesses accountable. Our march will start at 11am on the Art Museum stairs and we will make our way to City Hall where we will have speakers including youth organizers and partners. In addition, we will have an open mic portion for Black and Brown students to share their personal testimonies.
Our demands, which can be grouped using the acronym, YOUTH, include the following and can be read in full here:
Y - Yield community resources
O - Opportunities for education
U - Use your right to vote
T - Tell the whole story
H - Housing for students
We encourage you to visit our One-Stop Info Shop for more information about the day and the collection of visuals for the event.
