What Does Defunding the Police Mean for DV Survivors?

  • 3557

With uprisings happening across the country in response to the police murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and many more Black americans, many activists and communities are calling for defunding or completely abolishing the police. What would this mean for domestic violence survivors, many of whom rely on the police and prison systems as their most accessible tool for creating more safety in their lives?

Over this two hour training, we'll unpack the current and historical relationship between the survivor support movement and the police and prison systems, explore the impact of policing and prisons on survivors of abuse, and practice dreaming a world where violence is unimaginable in all of our communities.

This virtual training is open to people of all backgrounds and experience levels. We will be using small groups and interactive exercises over zoom so participants are encouraged to attend on their computer or other device that will support them to fully participate. And we want to invite everyone to attend in whatever way works for them. We're here to work with you around any accessibility needs or questions that you have, so please reach out to us at rschulz@lshphilly.org with any requests or questions.
