Weekly Car Caravan to Protest Police Violence - Mondays

  • 2882

In the last 28 years, police have killed over 170 people of every race in Portland, Oregon. In 100% of murders by police, officers were either not punished or didn’t stay punished.

Join Pacific Northwest Family Circle in a loving, compassionate, and LOUD car caravan to protest police violence.

When: Every Monday night at 5:30 pm

Leaving from: Portland Community College CLIMB Center
Back of the parking lot

How long: About 1 hour

AGENDA
ASL Interpretation provided by Fingers Crossed Interpreting for the first non-driving portion of event. When parking to get ready for the event, please leave a few parking spaces by the grey Toyota van with the loudspeaker. Let’s make sure that people who want to access this service can get close enough to see the interpreter without getting out of their car!
When approaching people, ask how they want to be kept safe(r).

We’ll start at the event at 5:30 pm with a Native Land Acknowledgement. Then Maria Cahill will say the name of each PNWFC Loved One. After each name, we’ll all say “We remember you” if they were killed and “We support you” if they survived. Then, we’ll drive the attached route REALLY SLOWLY with the flashers on. Then we’ll part ways until next Monday!

ROUTE
Police are notorious for quelling protest against them. Printouts of the route will be put out on a small table for people to retrieve in a socially distanced way or you can email Maria Cahill at pnwfamilycircle@gmail.com

TIPS FOR CARAVAN PROTESTING
Make A LOT of noise! Honk the horn… the whole time

Yell out the window if you want.

Fun chants are:
Hold Police Accountable!
No Justice, No Peace! No Racist Police!
Black Lives Matter!
Peace Not Police!
Save a Life! Defund the Police!
Abolish the Police!
Care Not Cops!

Attach signs to the car you’re using. Any of the chants above work great. Other good messages that PNWFC Family Members like are:

Who Do You Call When Police Murder?
Crime suspects deserve their day in court
Mental illness is not a crime
Physical disability is not a crime

Although we are a multi-racial organization, we respectfully ask that you DO NOT chant or have signs with the words “All Lives Matter”. This is a disrespectful and racist slur. It erases a painful history of the oppression of Black and African-American people in the United States. At PNWFC, we want to educate the public about the multi-racial nature of police violence. We don’t have to say “All Lives Matter” to make this point.

COVID 19 RECOMMENDATIONS
For anyone with access to a car, this is a good way to be physically distanced and still protest. Due to a recent spike in coronavirus cases in the Portland region, we respectfully and lovingly recommend:

Don’t assume that 6 feeet is enough distance for everyone to feel safe.

Drive with the windows closed if you are alone or with someone else who is sheltering with you.

Drive with all the windows open if you’re giving a ride to someone that you don’t shelter in place with.

Wear a mask if you plan to drive with the window next to your head open. People on bikes and on foot approach and pass cars all the time, especially when at a stop. If someone coughs, sneezes, or breathes hard into the window, you could be exposed to COVID19.
