For 2020, AMSA Crossing Borders is introducing our Virtual Palm Sunday Rally!
The health of refugees and people seeking asylum is too important to wait until COVID-19 is under control. We must continue fighting.
What we need you to do this April 5th:
* Post a photo of yourself inside, holding a sign that says “Today, I am marching at home for refugees around the world #detentionharmshealth”
* Or, send that photo to AMSA Crossing Borders so we can post it for you
Why is it important that we continue fighting for this cause?
It’s impossible to know just how much COVID-19 will affect those seeking asylum in these early stages, but we can imagine:
* With global travel bans in place, this will affect people fleeing persecution in getting to a place of refuge
* The population density of people in refugee camps or detention centres, alongside inadequate healthcare, housing and sanitation, impairs the ability of these people to socially distance themselves and leaves an already vulnerable population at greater risk of catching and spreading the virus.
* As the virus spreads through countries with healthcare systems that cannot cope with the increased healthcare needs, we may see a breakdown of social infrastructure and economies that will leave more people in poverty or forced to leave their homes
Please join us, at a time when refugees and people seeking asylum need support more than ever.
